The
lifesize sculpture of "Johnny Mercer" is currently in
production. The sculpture of "Savannah's Favorite Son"
was commissioned by The Friends of Johnny Mercer and will be placed
in downtown Savannah, Georgia, upon completion.
From the mid-1930s through the mid-1950s, many of the songs Johnny
Mercer wrote and performed were among the most popular hits of the
time. He wrote the lyrics to more than a thousand songs, including
compositions for movies and Broadway shows. He received nineteen
Academy Award nominations and four Academy Awards for Best Song.
Mercer was also a co-founder of Capitol Records.
The
lifesize "Johnny Mercer" sculpture is modeled after a
famous photograph of Mr. Mercer in New York City leaning on a fire
hydrant, reading a newspaper.
